August/September 2006Opposites AttractRena Inoue can't help but remember the early days of her partnership with John Baldwin. Like the hum of white noise, people asked her almost constantly if she knew what she was getting into. Was she really going to skate with Baldwin, a longtime competitor in the singles scene but a skater who was known more for lackadaisical training and Western cowboy costumes than as a serious contender? This team is not going to last. That's all Inoue kept hearing. My, how times change. Not only are Inoue and Baldwin still together, now six seasons after they were first paired together, but they have also gone on to win two U.S. pairs titles and earned a trip to the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Torino, Italy.
Read all about Rena Inoue and John Baldwin in the August/September issue of SKATING.
Also featured in this issue ... Automaticby Troy Schwindt When Kendra Moyle was looking for a partner at the end of 2004, she posted her profile on the partner search section of the U.S. Figure Skating web site. Moyle, of Chelsea, Mich., had competed at the U.S. Junior Championships for the previous two years with partner Reed Minney, placing near the top of the juvenile and intermediate classes. She also qualified as a singles skater both years, and appeared poised to elevate her game to the junior ranks.
Enter Andy Seitz, who at the time was skating with his younger sister, Lindsey. Seitz spotted Moyle's profile and picked up the phone. He may just do it.
In 2005 Graham passed eight tests in one day, completing pre-preliminary through juvenile in both moves in the field and free skating. In recent months, he passed intermediate. Not bad for someone who has been skating only four years, had few formal lessons and spent a good deal of time in rental skates. | IN THIS EDITION |
