June/July 2001Swedish SurpriseWorld Synchronized Skating Championships ![]() The glamour of the "first" World Synchronized Skating Championships is well in the past. There are no more firsts necessarily, except perhaps for the U.S. teams. For America, the most important firsts are still ahead - first medal, first World title. Two U.S. teams - the Haydenettes (USA 1) and Miami University (USA 2), traveled halfway around the world to Helsinki, Finland, in an attempt to capture those lofty goals. Miami was making its first trip to the World Championships, although the team competed in the ISU's World Challenge Cup, a precursor to the World Championships. At the last Challenge Cup, Miami finished sixth, and coach Vicki Korn and her team were hoping to step it up a notch this year. ...
