Team rituals: The team practices every Sunday and has supplemental practices in the weeks prior to competitions. Besides skating, many also take dance and play instruments.
What makes The Storm special? In 2002, on the 100th anniversary of the Teddy Bear, we skated to a "Teddy Bears" medley dressed as teddy bears (pictured above).
What is the best part of being on a synchronized team? We have 20 girls on the team, ranging in age from 7 to 11. Only two of the girls were on the team last year and 18 were new. We have really come together. Most of the girls on the team are only 8 years old.
What are some of your favorite memories? Going to Charleston, S.C., for the Eastern Synchronized Team Skating Sectional Figure Skating Championships was an exciting adventure. Due to the sparce number of rinks in the Charleston area, we had to travel two hours by bus (each way, each day) to get ice time. To celebrate our win, we had a pool party that night in the Holiday Inn pool folowed by cake. No one even seemed to mind swimming in the outdoor pool, even though it was absolutely freezing in Charleston that week (snowflurries even fell).
Attention, synchronized skaters!
If you'd like to see your synchronized team profiled in SKATING magazine, fill out the Synchronized Spotlight submission form below and send in a team picture to become the next team featured in Synchronized Spotlight! You can send in the form and photo by mail or e-mail them to skatingmagazine@usfigureskating.org.
Any team in the preliminary, youth introductory, teen introductory, juvenile, intermediate or novice divisions is eligibile. (Sorry higher level teams – this is for kids only!) Teams will be selected by SKATING magazine. We request that the questions are answered by the skaters — not moms, dads, big sisters, coaches or team managers. But please make sure to provide a contact phone number for a representative team member or coach.
