| The Island Waves |
Club/level: Nantucket Skating Club/Pre-juvenile
Coaches: Head coach Kristin DeFrancisci, assistant coach Belinda Yancy
Team members: Mary Jean Caro, Amanda Garceau, Lily Garceau, Olivia Harrington, Kelli Molloy, Alaina Paterson, Christine Sisson, Olivia Slade, Lizzie Thayer, Courtney Yancy
Team rituals: We have two mascots (a pink frog for good luck and a blue frog for team spirit) that hang out in our locker room while we are practicing and come to our competitions. Before we go on the ice for a competition, we all hold hands in a circle, close our eyes and squeeze hands. We also have lots of great cheers.
What makes the Island Waves special? Nantucket is an island and until four years ago, when we got our ice rink, there was nowhere to skate and no kids who could really skate. Last year we became the first synchronized skating team from Nantucket; we entered two competitions and brought home gold medals both times. This year we are competing as pre-juvenile with two new members, Rackeem Baker and Katherine Colpitts, and we also have a new beginner line as well.
Team goals: To improve our skating and we all want to pass our pre-preliminary moves in the field so that we can compete at the open juvenile level next year. We also want to have fun and skate our best this season. Also, we would love our own locker room.
What is the best part of being on a synchronized team? Learning the routines and having a bunch of friends to hang out with while skating. We always try to work as a team and we have become good friends. Traveling to competitions is always fun, too. Also, our coaches are the best. They work hard with us and have taught us so much about skating and being a team.
What are some of your favorite memories? Both of the competitions we entered last season were interrupted by huge snowstorms. We had to stay an extra night both times, and at the Cape Cod Classic in Bourne, Mass., when we finally arrived at the rink, the power went out for two hours. We had to come back the next day to skate. We also love to trade pins with the other teams at the competitions.
