Why is Ice Mystique special? Every team is special in its own right. Our team takes the word "special" to a new level. Ice Mystique, our new name in 2002, started as a combination of different levels and ages from four teams from the Greater San Francisco Bay Area, as far away as 100 miles. In one season, 40 skaters pulled together to form the strongest youth team to ever represent the Bay Area. Our team is very different than the other sections of the country because the Bay Area is extremely diverse!
Team goals: Our most important goal as a team is to skate clean programs at sectionals and the U.S. Synchronized Skating Championships. We also enjoy getting to know one another and having fun. And, of course, our coaches want us to improve our individual skating skills. Our team motto is "Skate with passion, power and pride!"
What's the best part of being on a synchronized skating team? The best part is the friendships that are formed. In synchronized skating you have to trust and depend on each other while performing. A team offers the opportunity to build confidence and leadership skills. "I love the quiet moments just before we step on the ice," says one team member. "We're not talking ... we're just there with each other, and to me that's what counts."
What are some of your best memories?
Kara, who has been with the team the longest, recalls "entering the ice arena at the 1995 U.S. Championships in San Diego and walking into the stands to view the ice from above." Ashley remembers watching all her roommates put mousse and gel in their hair, so she picked up a bottle of sparkling gel and put it all over her hair - within minutes her hair started to foam. She had put shower gel in her hair!
Attention, synchronized skaters!
If you'd like to see your synchronized team profiled in SKATING magazine, fill out the Synchronized Spotlight submission form below and send in a team picture to become the next team featured in Synchronized Spotlight! You can send in the form and photo by mail or e-mail them to skatingmagazine@usfsa.org.
Any team in the preliminary, youth introductory, teen introductory, juvenile, intermediate or novice divisions is eligibile. (Sorry higher level teams – this is for kids only!) Teams will be selected by SKATING magazine. We request that the questions are answered by the skaters — not moms, dads, big sisters, coaches or team managers. But please make sure to provide a contact phone number for a representative team member or coach.
