Reminders to Our Clubs
by Jenny Plattenberger
U.S. Figure Skating offers tools to help clubs meet their goals

running a club
Running a club is similar to running a small buisness. Most of the principles necessary to make a business successful also apply to making a club successful.

There are some basic charcteristics common to all good clubs:
1. Mission - The mission of the club should be defined and should guide the club's leaders in the decisions they make.

2. Positive partnerships/relationships - Developing partnerships and relationships with the rink and with other clubs benefits all parties.

3. Strong board - Having leaders who are looking out for the club's best interest and aren't afraid to make decisions is imperative.

4. Parental/member support - Members and parents of members are an important component. The more positive and supportive they are, the better off the club is.

5. Organization - Being well organized is the key to success in almost any area of life. Having defined goals and jobs allows everyone to work in the same direction.

6. Risk management plan - No one wants to think the worst, but it is always better to have a plan in place in case the worst happens.

7. Solid financial plan - When money worries are a problem, there is little time to focus on anything else. Having a solid financial plan can free up your club to work on other things.

8. TEAMWORK - A club can't be successful unless everyone is working together - the board, members, parents and partners. Remember that in the end everyone hopes to accomplish the same goal and make the club the best it can.

for board members
The responsibilities of a board member are great. Worksheets are tools your club can use to recruit and maintain a successful board.

These items can be found in the Conflict Resolution Guide. Go to the Clubs section and look under forms or click here.

conflict of interest
In an effort to encourage clubs to address conflict at the local level, U.S. Figure Skating now requires clubs to insert a conflict of resolution process into their bylaws. This addition must be done by Sept. 1.

getting the word out
It is not too late to order your customized television commercial. This is a 30-second spot featuring top skaters such as Michelle Kwan and Todd elderedge as well as the voices of Peggy Fleming and Dick Button. What a great way to market your club! Details
