Sharon Westerfeld
Sister of Stephanie WesterfeldSharon ("Sherri") Westerfeld, 25, was the elder daughter of Otto and Myra Westerfeld. Born in Kansas City, Mo., she tried ice skating at age 4 during a family vacation at the Broadmoor Ice Palace in Colorado Springs, Colo. She continued skating in Kansas City, training with Canadian coach Mary Jane Halstead at the Pla-Mor ice rink. When Westerfeld was 8, her sister, Stephanie ("Steffi"), was born, and at age 4, Steffi joined her on the ice. The sisters returned to the Broadmoor every summer. Westerfeld took lessons from Edi Scholdan in singles and from Walter Muehlbronner in dance. After permanently moving to Colorado Springs in 1949, she competed in the Midwestern and U.S. championships, and passed her eighth figures test--the third member of the Broadmoor Skating Club to become a gold medalist. After being named second alternate to the 1953 World Team, she retired competitively and eventually graduated from Colorado College. Although Westerfeld never excelled competitively, she was the No. 1 supporter of her sister, who won every Midwestern title and four national medals. After Steffi won the silver medal at the 1961 U.S. Championships, Sherri accompanied her sister to the 1961 North American Championships and the 1961 World Championships in Prague.
