Kristi was introduced to the skaters and spent 30 minutes doing a question and answer session with more than 100 skaters. (Everyone got a good laugh when a young skater asked Kristi if she had ever skated in any "big" competitions.) The skaters then were split into groups according to level and received a lesson from the RecZone coaching staff, while Kristi floated around and tried to give each skater a little one-on-one time. The skaters were then lined up to take an individual photo with Kristi, and each skater got to have one item autographed; most chose a skate.

The session concluded with free skate time and the distribution of goodies from U.S. Figure Skating. More than 20 local figure skaters showed up to volunteer their time. It was a wonderful morning for all! The News & Observer ran a couple articles about the RecZone's "It's Great to Skate" clinic, which you can read by clicking here and here.

During the lessons, the younger members of the club manned a nine-game carnival, with fun activities such as a "Lace the Skate" fishing game. Small prizes were awarded to every participant at each game. Skating-themed coloring pages and puzzles were offered in a quiet area, and the video "Skating Through Time" was shown on a TV. Snowplow Sam was there in his earmuffs and blue scarf for photo opportunities. The hockey and ice-carving community responded to our invitation with concessions and information tables. Berkley Royal Blades Figure Skating Club, Berkley, Mich.
The Berkley Royal Blades FSC, located in a suburb north of Detroit, held its fifth annual clinic on Jan. 21 as part of U.S. Figure Skating's National Skating Month. Despite the threat of a winter storm, the event drew more than 120 participants, ranging in age from toddlers to adults, for the nearly two-hour session. The clinic was promoted through a flyer distributed in public schools in the area and through an article published in a local newspaper serving several communities in the area.

The program began with a 15-minute exhibition by seven of the club's skaters representing various levels. After a brief orientation, skaters were grouped into various sections of the ice depending on age, skill level and previous ice experience: new skaters, toddler-6, 7-12, 13-adult, skaters already enrolled in a Basic Skills program and skaters working on jumps and spins. One or more coaches, assisted by club members, worked with each group for a half hour. Then the skaters had the remaining thirty minutes of the session to try out their newly learned skills or simply to have fun on the ice.

This competition featured skaters from the U.S. and Canada, six of whom had Olympic medals to their name.

Jan. 27 - Skate with the Mascots
This event has become the staple of Pettit's National Skating Month celebration. Both local and national mascots were invited to the Jan. 27 public skating session, and mascots were in attendance from 1-4 p.m. More than 20 mascots were present for the event, and they could be seen welcoming folks as they entered the lobby/building, skating on the Olympic Oval and handing out goodies to the kids.

The highlight of the event was the Klement's Racing Sausages - the same sausages that run a race at every Milwaukee Brewers game at Miller Park. The Pettit staff was responsible for finding people to wear the suits, and it looked for the best skaters possible. A collection of figure skaters, hockey players, speed skaters and facility volunteers put on quite a show. Four sausage ice skating races were held, much to the delight of the public skaters. The staff handed out U.S. Figure Skating and National Skating Month giveaway items, along with skating school, birthday party and summer camp information.

Tables were set up around the rink lobby with general skating information for skaters and parents, information about the Learn-To-Skate program, coloring book pages with figure skating and hockey cartoon pictures for kids, and a raffle drawing that included a goodie bag filled with U.S. Figure Skating giveaways. The volunteers (parents from the Learn-To-Skate program and sisters from the Alpha Sigma Tau sorority), rink staff and Learn-To-Skate coaches made the event a huge success.

Mount Pleasant Ice Arena, Baltimore Md.
Dorothy Hamill joined skaters at the Mount Pleasant Ice Arena on Feb. 3 to help celebrate National Skating Month. Hamill, who has lived in Baltimore since 1997, skates regularly at Mt. Pleasant and came to the rink during the celebration to help encourage young skaters to pursue the sport. Hamill joined group lesson skaters on the ice to pose for photographs. She also signed autographs and posed off the ice for some of the hundreds of fans that attended the public event.
