Kwan Wins U.S. Sports Academy January Athlete of the Month
(2/16/05) — Michelle Kwan won yet another January Athlete of the Month award after winning her ninth U.S. title at the 2005 State Farm U.S. Figure Skating Championships last month. The most recent honor came from the United States Sports Academy. She also received the award from the United States Olympic Committee earlier in the month.
Kwan's nine titles tied her with Maribel Vinson for the all-time U.S. record. The five-time world champion and two-time Olympic medalist earned seven perfect 6.0s for presentation, giving her a record 42 at the U.S. Championships in her illustrious career that began more than a decade ago at 12 years old.
New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady took home top honors in the men's category. Kwan beat out tennis sensation Serena Williams and World Speedskating champion Jennifer Rodriguez to win the award.
