(3/11/08) - Derrick Delmore, the 1998 World Junior and 1999 U.S. Collegiate champion, announced today his retirement from competitive singles skating.
Delmore had considered retirement following the end of last season, but his surprising sixth-place finish at the 2007 State Farm U.S. Championships convinced him to come back for another season.
While he is through skating singles, Delmore said he would consider returning to competition for the 2008-09 season if he is able to find a suitable pairs partner. He competed in pairs at the 1991 U.S. Championships with Alix Clymer and at the 1996 U.S. Championships with Crystal Kim.
"I would love to have the opportunity to compete in pairs again before I end my competitive career altogether," Delmore said.
Delmore finished 15th at this, his final U.S. Championships, but his short program was seventh best in the segment.
"The U.S. Championships were particularly special for me this year," Delmore said. "My first U.S. Championships were in Minneapolis in 1991, and I was fortunate enough to compete at every nationals up through this year's championships."
Delmore has been a member of the U.S. National Team since 1993. In addition to winning the gold medal at the 1998 World Junior Championships and the 1999 U.S. Collegiate Championships in the senior men's division, he racked up eight top-10 finishes at the U.S. Championships, with a career-best finish of fifth in 1998. He also captured the silver medal at the 2000 Nebelhorn Trophy.
Delmore acknowledged several people who have helped shape his skating career, foremost among them his coach of 21 years, Shirley Hughes.
"I'm grateful for all the years I was fortunate enough to be a member of the U.S. Team," Delmore said. "I have so many wonderful experiences and will take away tons of fond memories that I will cherish for the rest of my life. Nothing, of course, would have been possible without the support of U.S. Figure Skating."
In addition to continuing on in the sport by performing and coaching, Delmore has also expressed interest in becoming a sports psychologist. A 2000 Stanford University graduate, Delmore was a member of U.S. Figure Skating's 1996 Scholastic Honors Team.
