RISE revisited at 2011 Governing Council

(4/29/11) - U.S. Figure Skating's 2011 Governing Council kicked off Friday afternoon in Lombard, Ill.

U.S. Figure Skating President Patricia St. Peter and U.S. Figure Skating Executive Director David Raith helped launch the meeting by revisiting the success of RISE, which premiered nationwide on Feb. 17, 2011, and was presented in an encore March 7, 2011.

St. Peter and Raith talked about the impact that RISE enjoyed in terms public and media exposure. RISE was viewed at 526 movie theaters across the country with more than 50,000 tickets sold. It was one of Fathom Events' top one-night, original sporting events ever. Fathom Events, part of National CineMedia, presents in-theater entertainment on the largest digital network in the nation.

Club involvement, Raith said, played a critical role in the success of RISE.

"It was a great night across the country," Raith said. "We had wonderful club involvement and through the power of the clubs, you made it happen."

Raith ended the presentation by thanking the clubs, calling their efforts surrounding RISE the highlight of his six-year tenure at U.S. Figure Skating.

The success of RISE also helped spur Memorial Fund donations to record levels. As of March 31, 2011, more than $445,000 in revenue has been generated for the Memorial Fund. These funds will help support athletes in their skating and academic careers.

Raith also talked about the future for RISE, with plans later this year for DVD and television releases as well as potential future theatrical releases.

St. Peter wrapped up the presentation by honoring the 1961 U.S. World Team.

"The 1961 Team will never be forgotten," she said. "They will always be in our skating family."
