Boston Selected to Host 2014 Prudential U.S. Figure Skating Championships

(6/5/12) - U.S. Figure Skating announced today the selection of Boston as the host city for the 2014 Prudential U.S. Figure Skating Championships, Jan. 5-12, 2014. The 2014 U.S. Championships will serve as the final qualifying event prior to the selection of the U.S. Olympic Figure Skating Team that will represent Team USA Feb. 7-23, 2014, in Sochi, Russia, at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games. Competition and practice for the 2014 Championships will be held at TD Garden and the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center respectively.

The annual event, held since 1914, is the nation's most prestigious figure skating event, with past winners including Michelle Kwan, Kristi Yamaguchi, Scott Hamilton, Evan Lysacek and Massachusetts natives Nancy Kerrigan (Woburn, Mass.) and Todd Eldredge (Chatham, Mass.). Champions will be crowned in 20 events: ladies, men's, pairs and ice dancing at the senior, junior, novice, intermediate and juvenile levels of the U.S. Figure Skating competitive structure.

The U.S. Championships return to Boston for the seventh time in the event's history (2001, 1962, '41, '31, '26, '22). The Boston area has hosted numerous regional and sectional championships and, most recently, the 2012 U.S. Synchronized Skating Championships. The 2013 World Synchronized Skating Championships will take place April 2-6, 2013, on the campus of Boston University.

"U.S. Figure Skating looks forward to returning to Boston for the 2014 Prudential U.S. Figure Skating Championships," U.S. Figure Skating Executive Director David Raith said. "The area is steeped in figure skating tradition. I'm confident that the community's impressive skating history will extend to the 2014 U.S. Championships."

The U.S. Championships annually attract more than 1,500 athletes, coaches and officials to the host community and has generated $20 million to $25 million in economic impact for recent host cities. The 2014 U.S. Olympic Team will be announced following the Championship events.

U.S. Figure Skating and Prudential Financial recently renewed an agreement at the organization's premier Partner level of sponsorship. The new agreement, which extends through the end of 2014, includes entitlement of the 2014 U.S. Championships and the 2013 Prudential U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Omaha, Neb., Jan. 20-27, 2013. In addition, Prudential will be an associate sponsor of 2013 and 2014 Hilton HHonors Skate America, and will receive additional marketing assets, commercial inventory and grassroots activation throughout the term of the agreement.

U.S. Figure Skating is partnering locally with the Skating Club of Boston to organize and conduct the event.

"The Skating Club of Boston is extremely pleased to have been chosen to host U.S. Figure Skating's premier event in its very special 100th anniversary year," Club president Joe Blount said. "As a founding member of U.S. Figure Skating, we have a long and exciting history hosting the U.S. Championships. Boston has always been home to some of the country's most enthusiastic skating fans, and with the support of the Mayor's office, and our partners at TD Garden, the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center and the Mass Sports Partnership, the Club is promising a spectacular event - both on and off the ice - that will long be remembered by athletes, officials and fans."

The event will be broadcast live on NBC Sports and online at icenetwork.com. Recent U.S. Championships were held in Spokane, Wash. (2010), Greensboro, N.C. (2011) and San Jose, Calif. (2012). Tickets to the 2014 U.S. Championships will be available later this summer.

In related news, U.S. Figure Skating announced the host cities for the 2014 regional and sectional championships, which will take place in the fall of 2013.

The top four skaters in the ladies and men's events at each of the nine regional championships will qualify for one of three sectional championships. The sectional championships are the only qualifying phase for pairs and ice dancing. The top four finishers at each level in each discipline at the sectional championships will earn a berth to the U.S. Championships.
