Eight Athletes to Represent Team USA at 2013 JGP Mexico

(9/3/13) - The 2013 International Skating Union (ISU) Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating (JGP) Series continues Sept. 3-7, 2013, in Mexico City. The event, being held at Fun Central Cuautitlan, begins Thursday with the short dance and men's short program.

Eight athletes will represent the United States at the event in ladies, men's and ice dance. Icenetwork will provide complete event coverage including recaps and photos.

LADIES
Both American team members will begin their JGP careers in Mexico City after standing at the top of the U.S. junior podium in January. Polina Edmunds is the reigning U.S. junior titlist and she will be joined in Mexico by 2013 U.S. junior silver medalist Mariah Bell.

MEN'S
Nathan Chen, the 2013 U.S. junior bronze medalist, will compete in his third JGP event. He started last season with a gold medal win at 2012 JGP Austria before withdrawing after the short program due to injury at 2012 JGP Croatia. Tomoki Hiwatashi, who has won U.S. titles at the juvenile (2011), intermediate (2012) and novice (2013) levels, is set to compete internationally for the first time this week.

ICE DANCE
Kaitlin Hawayek and Jean-Luc Baker begin their second season together and earned a pair of silver medals last year at JGP Germany and at the U.S. junior level. The duo most recently finished seventh at the 2013 World Junior Championships. Chloe Rose Lewis and Logan Bye are the current U.S. novice champions and will compete internationally for the first time.

Now in its 17th season, the JGP Series consists of seven international events in a cumulative point-scoring format. Each athlete is eligible to score points in two of the seven scheduled events (pairs can compete in two of five designated events). The top six point-earners in each discipline qualify for the Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final, Dec. 5-8, in Fukuoka, Japan.

The 2013 Junior Grand Prix Series consists of the remaining events:

  • JGP Slovakia: Kosice, Slovakia - Sept. 11-15 (includes pairs)
  • JGP Poland: Gdansk, Poland - Sept. 18-22
  • JGP Belarus: Minsk, Belarus - Sept. 25-29 (includes pairs)
  • JGP Czech Republic: Ostrava, Czech Republic - Oct. 2-6 (includes pairs)
  • JGP Estonia: Tallinn, Estonia - Oct. 9-13 (includes pairs)
  • JGP Final: Fukuoka, Japan - Dec. 5-8 (includes pairs)
