2014 JGP Czech Republic Begins Thursday

(9/3/14) - The 2014 International Skating Union (ISU) Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating (JGP) Series continues Sept. 4-6, in Ostrava, Czech Republic. The event, being held at CEZ Arena, begins Thursday with the short dance and ladies and pairs short programs.

Eleven athletes will represent the United States in ladies, men's, pairs and ice dance. Icenetwork will provide complete event coverage including recaps, photos and blogs.

Karen Chen, a two-time JGP medalist, will make her season debut. Following two medal-winning finishes in her Junior Grand Prix assignments last year, Chen qualified for the JGP Final but then withdrew due to injury.

Andrew Torgashev will make his international debut in Ostrava. Torgashev competed last season at the novice level, placing fourth at the U.S. Championships. Tony Lu was scheduled to compete but withdrew due to injury Tuesday.

Cirinia Gillett and Maximiliano Fernandez and Lindsay Weinstein and Jacob Simon are the 2014 U.S. novice silver and pewter medalists, respectively, and will compete internationally for the first time.

Lorraine McNamara and Quinn Carpenter are the reigning JGP Final bronze medalists and 2014 U.S. junior silver medalists. Most recently they finished fourth at the World Junior Championships in March. Christina Carreira and Anthony Ponomarenko announced their partnership in April and will make their competitive debut.

Now in its 18th season, the JGP Series consists of seven international events in a cumulative point-scoring format. Each athlete is eligible to score points in two of the seven scheduled events (pairs can compete in two of four designated events). The top six point-earners in each discipline qualify for the Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final, Dec. 11-14, in Barcelona, Spain.

The 2014 Junior Grand Prix Series consists of the remaining events:

  • JGP Japan: Aichi, Japan - Sept. 10-14
  • JGP Estonia: Tallinn, Estonia - Sept. 24-28 (includes pairs)
  • JGP Germany: Dresden, Germany - Oct. 1-5 (includes pairs)
  • JGP Croatia: Zagreb, Croatia - Oct. 8-12 (includes pairs)
  • JGP Final: Barcelona, Spain - Dec. 11-14 (includes pairs)
