Nine U.S. Athletes to Compete at 2011 Rostelecom Cup this Week

(11/22/11) - Nine U.S. athletes will compete at 2011 Rostelecom Cup, the final qualifying event of the 2011 International Skating Union (ISU) Grand Prix of Figure Skating Series.

Competition begins Friday with all four disciplines taking the ice in Moscow.

NBC Sports will broadcast the ladies and men's free skates from Rostelecom Cup on Saturday, Dec. 3 from 1-3 p.m. (ET) with additional broadcast coverage on Universal Sports. Reigning U.S. silver medalist Rachael Flatt leads the American women into Moscow. She opened the season at Skate Canada. Flatt will be joined by Agnes Zawadzki, who made her season debut at NHK Trophy two weeks ago, and Christina Gao, who made her international senior debut at Cup of China where she placed fifth.

Jeremy Abbott looks for his second gold medal of the season and a chance to qualify for the 2011 ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final in December. Abbott took the 2011 Cup of China title in early November. Brandon Mroz previously competed at NHK Trophy where he became the first man to land a quadruple Lutz in an ISU competition during his short program.

Ashley Cain & Joshua Reagan, the 2011 U.S. junior champions, make their Grand Prix Series debut in Russia. They opened the season with a fourth-place showing at 2011 Cup of Nice in late October.

Meryl Davis & Charlie White look for their eighth consecutive gold medal dating back to the beginning of last season. They were already gold medalists at 2011 Hilton HHonors Skate America, the Grand Prix Series' opening event.

The Grand Prix Series, now in its 17th season, consists of six international events in a cumulative point-scoring format. Approximately 300 athletes from 30 countries are expected to participate in the series. Each athlete is eligible to score points in two of the six scheduled events. The top six point-earners in each discipline qualify for the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final in Quebec City, Canada, Dec. 8-11. Athletes will compete for a total of more than $1.35 million in prize money throughout the series.
