President

"The President shall preside at all meetings of the Governing Council and the Board of Directors. The president shall generally supervise the activities of USFS and shall, with the Secretary, sign all agreements and contracts made by U.S. Figure Skating."

Duties

The duties of the President include the following:

  • Chairs meetings of the Board of Directors and the Governing Council
  • Leads the Board of Directors in establishing and implementing current and future goals and objectives of USFS
  • Supervises and works with the Executive Director
  • Appoints the chairs of the permanent committees (except Athletes Advisory, Audit and Finance) upon the recommendation of the Nominating Committee, the representatives and delegates to the ISU, the PSA, STAR and such other organizations with which USFS is affiliated
  • Ex officio member of all committees except the Nominating Committee
  • Oversees relations with the International Skating Union and its Members regarding international matters related to USFS, including commercial matters and the award of ISU events to USFS
  • Representative to the USOC
  • Ex officio member of U.S. Figure Skating Foundation Board of Trustees
  • One of three official spokespersons for USFS (along with the Executive Director and Director of Media and Public Relations)
  • Support the transition to a successor when term is completed

Other Activities

  • Developing harmonious and effective working relationships among Board members
  • Provides support and encouragement to all members
  • Provides feedback to the Nominating Committee, as requested
  • Required to attend U.S. Championships, and may attend select international competitions, including Grand Prix Final, World Championships and Olympics
  • Attend annual meeting of Board of Trustees of U.S. Figure Skating Foundation and participate in quarterly conference calls
  • Attend USO Assembly and participate in monthly calls with USOC and other NGBs
  • Developing harmonious and effective working relationship with PSA
  • Attend annual PSA Conference
  • Attend Champs Camp

Qualifications


Highly Recommended:

  • Served in a position on the Board of Directors for at least one full year;
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, especially within the USFS structure
  • Broad knowledge of the USFS structure and its system of governance and USFS events, programs and services
  • Demonstrated business experience and managerial experience (e.g. with a corporation, business venture, non-profit, large organization, or group of professionals), including financial oversight, budgeting and personnel selection and supervision and negotiation skills
  • Excellent communications (oral and written) skills
  • Served as a delegate or attended USFS Governing Council for a minimum of 3 years
  • Experience with international competitive skating (skater, team leader, judge, parent of an international competitor, etc.)
  • Experience as a competitive skater, judge, accountant, official, Club President or similar leadership position
  • College degree with advanced degree highly recommended
Estimated time commitment: Significant time commitment including board meetings, skating competitions, ISU meetings, competition and public relations appearances; includes frequent interaction with the Executive Director and need for flexibility in personal/business schedule to fulfill USFS obligations. Potential of 3 +/- hours per day on USFS matters.
