2018 Prudential U.S. Figure Skating Championships Begin Friday in San Jose

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (12/28/2017) — The 2018 Prudential U.S. Figure Skating Championships will be held Dec. 29, 2017-Jan. 7, 2018, in San Jose, California, with championship competition and junior free skates taking place at the SAP Center and junior short programs, novice, intermediate and juvenile competitions being held at Solar4America Ice. Nearly 400 figure skaters will vie for 20 U.S. titles in the disciplines of ladies, men’s, pairs and ice dance.

The U.S. Championships serve as the final qualifying competition before U.S. Figure Skating names its nominations to the U.S. Olympic Figure Skating Team, as well as the 2018 World Figure Skating Team, 2018 World Junior Figure Skating Team and 2018 Four Continents Figure Skating Team. Team USA will send three ladies, three men, one pairs team and three ice dance teams to the Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang, South Korea, Feb 9-25, 2018.

Official practice begins Thursday, Dec. 28. Competition begins at 9 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 29 with the juvenile girls free skate. Championship-level competition begins Wednesday, Jan. 5 with the ladies short program.

NBCSN will host live primetime coverage of the event, beginning with the ladies short program Wednesday, Jan. 3, at 11:00 p.m. ET, and continuing with the pairs and men’s short program on Thursday afternoon. The short dance will be on NBCSN at 4 p.m. ET on Friday, Jan. 5. NBC begins its live coverage on Friday, Jan. 5, at 8 p.m. ET with the ladies free skate. On Saturday, Jan. 6, the pairs free skate will air on NBC at 4 p.m., with the men’s free skate following at 8 p.m. ET. Competition will conclude with NBC’s coverage of the free dance on Sunday, Jan. 7 at 3 p.m. NBC will also present the Smucker’s Skating Spectacular on Saturday, Jan. 13, at 4 p.m. ET.

NBC will feature behind-the-scenes access through its All-Access page on NBCSports.com, which will include live scoring and leaderboards, video features, fan polls and more.

Icenetwork will provide live and on-demand coverage to Season Pass subscribers. The icenetwork team, led by Mike Mancuso (play-by-play), features former Olympic, World and U.S. medalists. Returning to the booth are Brooke Castille, three-time U.S. pairs medalist; Tonia Kwiatkowski, a three-time U.S. medalist; two-time World bronze medalist Michael Weiss and 2014 Olympic ice dance champion Charlie White.

The U.S. Championships return to California for the 12th time and to San Jose for the third (1996, 2012). Northern California is/was home to several figure skating greats including Olympic champions Brian Boitano, Kristi Yamaguchi and Peggy Fleming, 1986 World champion Debi Thomas and 1996 U.S. champion Rudy Galindo, who won the U.S. title in his hometown the first time San Jose hosted this event. A handful of current championship level skaters also have roots in the Bay Area. 2014 Olympian and three-time U.S. medalist Polina Edmunds lives and trains in San Jose, while attending nearby Santa Clara University. 2017 U.S. champion Karen Chen, 2017 U.S. silver medalist Vincent Zhou and 2017 U.S. pewter medalist Elliana Pogrebinsky (ice dance) also are from the Bay Area.
