2019 U.S. Adult Figure Skating Championships Take Place This Week in Salt Lake City

The 2019 U.S. Adult Figure Skating Championships, hosted by Salt Lake Figure Skating, will be held this week in Salt Lake City. Nearly 400 skaters between the ages of 21 and 80 will compete at the Salt Lake City Sports Complex from April 3-6, 2019.

This year marks the 25th year of the event and the third time being held in Salt Lake City. Seven athletes are set to compete at the U.S. Adult Championships for the 25th year in a row and will become U.S. Figure Skating’s first Adult Skating Platinum Lifetime Competitors. This recognition is a part of the Lifetime Competitor Recognition Program which recognizes competitive adult figure skaters who have successfully demonstrated longevity in the sport.

Three additional awards will be presented at the event. The Yvonne M. Dowlen Trophy will be presented to the oldest competitor at the competition, and the Skate Forever Young Award will be presented to all athletes competing at the U.S. Adult Championships who are 71 and older. Lastly, the Adult Special Achievement Award will be given to adult athletes in IJS-judged qualifying events to encourage and reward high-quality elements, performances and skating.

Competitors at the U.S. Adult Championships are divided into five age groups (21-35, 36-45, 46-55, 56-65, 66+) and two tracks (masters and adults). Events are held in singles, pairs and ice dance, and in dramatic and light entertainment. Athletes qualify for championship events by placing in the top four at one of three sectional championships held in March.

This year’s championships events feature three-time reigning U.S. championship masters junior-senior ladies champion Regan Alsup and former Team USA athlete Matthew Blackmer in championship masters pairs with partner Carol Lynn Cooper.

Tickets start at $15 with a veteran and senior discount available for those over 65 at the Salt Lake City Sports Complex box office. All-event tickets can be purchased online here. Children ages 6 and under are free.
